Accessorizing Your Hardwood Floor

Last week, we discussed an easy method for refinishing old hardwood floors. Once the floors are finished, they are a wonderful thing to behold; however, as much as people love the beauty and functionality of hardwood floors, they do have downsides. Hardwood floors can feel cold, both literally and stylistically. While an open expanse of hardwood is wonderful for a dance studio, bowling alley, or basketball court, it can tend to feel incomplete and impersonal in a home.
Hardwood floors are a littlewellhard! Although they have the advantage of being easy to clean and they are a wonderful option for allergy sufferers, few people are drawn to the idea of an infant crawling on a bare hardwood floor. Few people cherish the idea of getting down on their hands and knees to play with children or pets on a hardwood floor.
Hardwood floors are cold in cool weather. This can be a particular problem in bedrooms; its difficult to get out of bed when feet have to hit that cold surface! Generally, bedrooms should have a cozy, homey feel; it can be difficult to achieve this with hardwood flooring.
Finally, a hardwood floor is an investment of time and moneyseveral thousand dollars, in most cases. If homeowners have children or pets, they should protect the floor from the damage that can occur from toys and claws. It only takes one fallen block tower or animal scratching session to leave a permanent impression.
Happily, there is an easy and stylish solution to all of these problems! Using an area rug as the base for living, dining, and play areas will add warmth and personality, increasing the level of comfort for loved ones, while simultaneously protecting the floor! Although its easy to assume that a beautiful hardwood floor should remain uncovered, an area rug actually complements and accents the floors.
For example, in a living area, an area rug can be large enough to support an entire seating arrangement or small enough to only accent a coffee table. With a large rug, the hardwood floor will be a tasteful and elegant border to a warm and inviting room. Using a small accent rug will give the room a more modern feel while highlighting and accentuating the brilliance of the flooring. No matter how great the finish on your hardwood floor, it will never look finished without a great area rug!
